The beginnings...

We moved in to this house exactly a week before Christmas Day 2009.  Before we moved I decided as we would now have the space it would be nice to have people round for Christmas day instead going elsewhere, crazy - I know with only a week to get moved in and organised ready to cook a big Christmas dinner - for 11 people!!  Anyway, it all worked out just fine and kind of made us get on and unpack stuff quickly!

So, as it was December when we moved in there wasn't a lot that could be done in the garden - except for admire the size of it.  Previous to living here I was living in an apartment close to the city - which was great but had no garden.  I had wanted a garden for a long, long time so I couldn't wait to get started, it was covered in snow from the day we moved in and for quite a while after so there was nothing that could be done - not physically anyway.  I spent the next few months thinking about what I could grow in my newly acquired vegetable patch and was really looking forward to getting started.

As soon as the weather got a bit better I started to weed and dig over the small bit garden that had previously been used as a vegetable plot.  There were a few strawberry plants left in by the previous people so I left these - I'll give them a season or two and get the runners from them to make a new strawberry patch elsewhere in the garden as they're not in the best place right now  - the bit they are in has no shade at all from sunrise to sunset and it's very open - the birds will love it!  Plus, I have other plans for that part of my plot.

The first things I decided to try were potatoes - the first lot went in around March time in the bed that you can just about see in the bottom left corner of the second picture.

....to be continued, keep checking back as I'm adding to this in between doing a million other things :)
